Lucky Monday - Knitwear placement 3 Months

About the company

Lucky Monday is a Knitwear Manufacturer and Wholesaler situated in Camden London. Their accounts include Asos, Next, Urban Outfitters, Miss Selfridge, Monsoon, Collusion and Pretty Little Thing. All designing and CAD work is done in house and then sent off to their factories in the Far-East which they visit regularly to look and new sampling techniques and new yarn compositions.

Set up

The ground level consisted of an open plan studio where the designers worked along side the directors, accountants, merchandiser, production assistants and sales assistants. The team was small and around 20 staff so was always a warm environment and you got to know everyone quickly. There was a show room on the top floor where they present to buyers from the accounts and shopping research or production and development that was relevant to that customer, which I also helped set up for each meeting and choosing current pieces and trends that reflected the brand best.

Daily tasks
Overall maintenance of the studio and rails ensuring garments were hung correctly and not being damaged with over crowding etc. Parcels of development knitwear would come in so I would present these to the directors and discuss as a group how we could improve or alter any parts. Then I'd photograph on a model or mannequin ready to be sent off to be shown to buyers. I would also keep in contact with the factories and email and samples or swatches we may need for a meeting. I'd then prepare spec sheets involving measuring up garments and giving the relevant information and supporting sketches so they could clearly recreate the design we wanted to prevent delays and mistakes.

They would also set me regular CAD tasks using illustrator to create the flat drawing with stitching and any ribs or placket details, then moving into photoshop to add textures, shading and colour to make it look like a realistic garment.

Some of the projects I designed for:

For each design I would create multiple looks with certain alterations for example finer/chunky ribs, cable shapes, size of pointelle or pattern and sleeve shapes.

We were often given inspiring images that they wanted the garment to link to but I had to come up with new and current designs to update the look so it looks fresh and draw there buyer in.
